…Proven quality world wide…
In this category there are two products differing only in particle size. The source material is white fir, red fir, and douglas fir. These products are graded both for minimum and maximum particle size in each category. Each of the materials provides all of the benefits discussed under mulching materials. For obvious reasons, the Mini grade is more commonly employed for use in walkways or in small containers for growing many types of plants (most commonly orchids). The small grade is used in larger containers for growing plants. The bark acts as a “sponge” reducing evaporation, and absorbing heat to optimize growing potential in plants. A frequently observed bonus benefit is the fragrance of the deep woods that emanates from these barks.
(1/8” – 1/4“) Mini Size |
|
This very fine granular bark, free of foreign material, colorful and fragrant, is ideal for growing orchids in small containers. It can also be employed for decorative purposes such as walkways or other places where a beautifully natural look is desired.
|
(1/4” - 3/4”) Small Size |
|
This fine granular bark, free of foreign material, colorful and fragrant, is ideal for growing orchids and other plants in medium to large containers. It can be employed for decorative purposes and is useful in small areas around trees and plants where it can help to smother weeds.
|
SPECIFIC GUIDELINES
MINI: The mulch shall be derived from the bark of white fir, red fir, and douglas fir, and shall be granular in structure with 100% falling in the range of 1/8” to 1/4” in diameter. (This material is commonly employed for growing orchids in small plant-growing containers. The suggested minimum rate for plant beds – 2 ½ cubic yards per 1,000 sq. ft.).
SMALL: The mulch shall be derived from the bark of white fir, red fir, and douglas fir, and shall be granular in structure with 100% of the particles falling between 1/4" to 3/4” in diameter. (This product is suggested for growing orchids in medium to large plant-growing containers. A minimum rate for good coverage in plant beds is 3 cubic yards per 1,000 sq. ft.).

A proven, composted bark humus selected from the best trees in the High
Sierras and made to meet the rigid specifications of the industry.
PREPARATION: Turf-N-Tee is a carefully screened and composted pure bark humus that lasts for years and years. Used in soil as an active conditioner, it is the modern successor to peat moss and leaf mold. Turf-N-Tee requires no shredding or pre-soaking. It contains an added wetting agent for quick moisture absorption, which cuts down watering time and helps trim costs. (used by golf courses, parks, athletic fields, growers)
FOR THE HOMEOWNER: Turf-N-Tee is recommended as a seed covering for new lawns, and is also excellent for use as a rejuvenating top dressing for old, tired turf. Turf-N-Tee may also be worked in as a soil improver for planting trees, shrubs, and bedding plants.
BENEFITS: Bark Humus does all of these important jobs:
- supplies rich organic matter (humus)
- holds moisture and fertilizer in soil
- aerates soil for full root development
- counteracts harmful soil alkalinity
- gives body and richness to poor or sandy soil
- keeps soil conditioned for years
- nitrogen and wetting agent added and…it’s clean, colorful, forest fragrant
(this product is a laboratory-controlled and field-tested humus)
WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT?: Turf specialists, particularly golf course superintendents, use substantial quantities of organic amendment in maintaining their high-quality turf that is subject to heavy traffic conditions. Turf-N-Tee is derived from the same bark sources as Forest Humus. However, it is graded to provide an optimum particle size for topdressing mixes. Also, it is treated with nitrogen to meet the particular requirements of turf. Certain other nutrients are present in naturally occurring quantities normal for the types of bark employed. A wetting agent is added to insure ease of wetting should the preparation become dry.
UTILIZATION
The typical use of this product, as indicated above, is for topdressing turf, greens in particular. Depending upon conditions prevailing, the superintendent may elect to use a small or very large proportion of organic blended with sand. A typical mixture would be equal volume proportions of Turf-N-Tee with sand. The blend should be uniformly prepared before application. Aerification should precede the spreading of the topdressing. Immediately after spreader application of approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch, the topdressing should be swept in with either a mat drag or broom. Immediately following the sweeping operation, a thorough irrigation should be provided. Treatment should always be made to turf that is relatively dry in order to facilitate movement of the material into the aerification holes and to the soil surface.
When re-seeding tees or in the initial seeding of greens, excellent results are obtained by topdressing with 100% Turf-N-Tee.
For other uses, see Forest Humus.

…Quality you can see and smell…
In this category there are three products differing only in particle size. The source material is all from White Fir, Red Fir, Douglas Fir or Pine. These products are graded both for minimum and maximum particle size in each category. Each of the materials provides all of the benefits discussed under mulching materials. For obvious reasons, the Small grade is more commonly employed for use in walkways. The larger grades are sometimes preferred for areas of high velocity wind, since they are less apt to blow. These larger grades are particularly desirable around swimming pools or other areas where transport of the mulch by wind or other physical means could constitute a nuisance. A frequently observed bonus benefit is the fragrance of the deep woods that emanates from these barks.
(1/4” – 3/4“) Small Size |
|
This fine granular bark, free of foreign material, is colorful and fragrant. Also a good mulch, Pathway Decorative Bark is most useful in smaller areas where you’ll find it effective in helping to smother weeds.
|
(1/2” - 1 1/2”) Medium Size |
|
This medium granular bark provides mulch along with its visually appealing texture. Resistant to wind and water movement, Medium Decorative Bark absorbs heat, reduces evaporation and dust, and eliminates glare. A deep red brown color, it’s attractive in almost any setting.
|
(1 1/2” - 3”) Large Size |
|
This large granular bark is particularly effective in high wind areas - it stays put under almost any condition. Its distinctive texture and forest fragrance is ideal for large areas, particularly where the rich color contrasts so attractively with green plants. It’s heat absorbent and amazingly long lasting.
|
SPECIFIC GUIDELINES
- SMALL: The mulch shall be derived from the bark of White Fir, Red Fir, Douglas Fir or Pine and shall be granular in structure, with 100% falling in the range of 1/4" to 3/4" in diameter. (This material is commonly employed for miscellaneous mulching, particularly of beds containing small plants or beds of limited size. Suggested minimum rate - 3 cubic yards per 1,000 sq. ft.)
- MEDIUM: The mulch shall be derived from bark of White Fir, Red Fir, Douglas Fir or Pine and shall be granular in structure, with 100% of the particles falling between 1/2" and 1-1/2" in diameter. (This product is suggested for medium to large size bed areas under shrubs of medium size. A minimum rate for good coverage is 5 cubic yards per 1,000 sq. ft.)
- LARGE: The mulch shall be derived from White Fir, Red Fir, Douglas Fir or Pine barks and shall be granular or chunky in nature, with all particles falling between 1-1/2" and 3" in diameter. (Provides outstanding texture in large areas. Minimum rate 6 cubic yards per 1,000 sq. ft.)

…A Rich Bark Soil Amendment…
Forest Humus is most commonly used as an additive to provide long-lasting improvement of soil structure. You’ll find it is unsurpassed as effective mulch for heat absorption and water conservation.
Forest Humus has been scientifically treated to eliminate the soil nitrogen depletion common with other wood residuals. It has long-lasting properties that only bark can provide – nature intended it to resist decomposition.
Architects and contractors prefer Forest Humus because its versatility and free-flowing characteristics make it easy to apply and easy to blend. It is available in standard grade and in large quantities.
This product is derived from the bark of fir and pine. It is carefully graded and is available in raw form or as a nitrogen-stabilized material. It is a characteristic of the bark of source material to contain moderate quantities of phosphate and potassium that are available for plant utilization. Processing may include the addition of iron in the form of sulfate to balance out nutritional requirements plus wetting agent to improve ease of wetting should the product become dry.
UTILIZATION
LANDSCAPE: Soil incorporation to improve soil structure frequently calls for a rate in the range of 2”material worked into a total depth of 6”. This calculates to 6 cu. Yds./1,000 sq. ft. Rotary tilling equipment is employed in order to obtain a uniform blend. If quantities greater than 2” are to be worked into the soil, it is desirable to apply 1 to 2 inches and work this in prior to making a second application. In some cases shallow amending is desired, and the only difference is setting a shallower depth of tiller. In addition to soil amending, Forest Humus is employed for mulching around shrub, flowerbed, and ground cover areas to provide temperature insulation, prevent crusting, and conserve moisture.
NURSERY: Soil mixes for container growing are commonly prepared using two-thirds Forest Humus and one-third sand or soil of grower’s choice. Appropriate fertilizers are added.
GREENHOUSE GROWING: For a pot plant mix, the grower will frequently use one-third Forest Humus, one-third peat moss, and one-third soil or sand of choice. This medium provides ideal conditions of aeration, drainage, and moisture retention. The same mix or one comprised of higher proportions of Forest Humus is frequently employed for preparation of beds for cut flower growing.

For Mulching and Erosion Control…
A product specifically designed for erosion control, Walk-On Bark also provides a pleasing surface cover. It adheres together well, slows and distributes the flow of water. Its soft, resilient surface - so clean and free draining - makes it ideal for walkways.
This product is fibrous, containing some woody material. It is highly efficient for mulching purposes, but not as decorative as the pure bark. It is very economical and commonly used for erosion control, mulching in all types of areas, particularly freeway landscape, walkways and garden paths, and mulching of tree basins during the period of establishment. A sufficiently dense cover will inhibit weed growth while providing the other benefits of mulching. This product does not lend itself to a tight specification, but does lend itself to a tight budget. It is not recommended for playground use or for areas of sophisticated landscape where depth of color is of primary concern. Application rates are recommended as a minimum 3 cubic yards per 1,000 square feet, which will provide approximately 1 inch of mulch to as much as 12 cubic yards per 1,000 square feet, which will provide 4 inches of mulch.
SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE MULCH AND EROSION
CONTROL AMENDMENT
- Shall be a wood residual derived from bark of pine, white fir and/or red fir.
- TYPICAL GRADING -- Walk-On Bark
- Shall be acid in reaction.
- Shall contain moisture at time of delivery in the amount of 15 percent or greater based on fresh weight.
